Anaphylactic shock following the bite of a wild Kayan slow loris (Nycticebus kayan): implications for slow loris conservation J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Madani,George; Nekaris,K Anne-Isola.
Background Asian slow lorises (Nycticebus spp.) are one of few known venomous mammals, yet until now only one published case report has documented the impact of their venomous bite on humans. We describe the reaction of a patient to the bite of a subadult Nycticebus kayan, which occurred in the Mulu District of Sarawak in 2012.Findings Within minutes of the bite, the patient experienced paraesthesia in the right side of the jaw, ear and right foot. By 40 minutes, swelling of the face was pronounced. The patient was admitted to Mulu National Park Health Clinic/Klinik Kesihatan Taman Mulu Tarikh, at which time he was experiencing: swollen mouth, chest pain, mild abdominal pain, nausea, numbness of the lips and mouth, shortness of breath, weakness, agitation...

BACILOS ÁCIDO ALCOHOLRESISTENTES EN BIOPSIAS EMBEBIDASEN PARAFINA EN CASOS DE INFLAMACIÓNGRANULOMATOSA CRÓNICA. Acta biol.Colomb.
BUSTAMANTE,JAVIER ANDRÉS; ASTUDILLO,MIRYAM; PAZOS,ALVARO JAIRO; LUIS EDUARDO,BRAVO.

Carbonated Water and Necro-Apoptotic Cell Death in Chicken Embrio Low Limb International Journal of Morphology
Álvarez,Marco; Perdomo,Lourdes.
Carbonated water is a fundamental part of many drinks and its effects have been studied in many pathological situations. However, cells and tissue damage as a consequence of carbonated water has not been the subject of extensive research. We assessed the short-term effects of soda on in vitro Hanging-drop culture of myoblasts and ex vivo lower limb of 8-day-old chicken embryo skeletal muscle tissue. Several groupswerendesigned: a) Control (Con-tyr), b) Carbonated water (Car), c) Coffe (Caf), and d) Cola beverage (Glu). The samples were observed with light microscopy and digital imaging analysis was performed. The ultra-structure of control and treated tissue were observed with electron microscopy. Immunohistochemistry techniques, such as terminal...

Cytotoxic effect of ICD-85 (venom-derived peptides) on MDA-MB-231 cell line J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Zare Mirakabadi,A; Mahdavi,S; Koohi,MK; Taghavian,M.
Since 1987, when chemopreventive testing programs began, more than 1,000 agents and agent combinations have been selected and evaluated in preclinical studies of chemopreventive activity against various types of cancers. In the present study we aimed to provide quantitative and qualitative characterization of biological and pharmacological activities of ICD-85 on MDA-MB-231 cell line (a highly invasive breast cancer cell line) in order to gain a better understanding of the cytotoxic and apoptotic effects of this compound. For this study, the MDA-MB-231 cell line was used and the effect of ICD-85 was assayed by measuring the activity of the cytosolic enzyme lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), released into the culture medium after membrane damage. Morphological...

Diagnostic and prognostic characteristics of phytotoxicity caused by fluoride on Spondias dulcis Forst. F. (Anacardiaceae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Sant'Anna-Santos,Bruno F.; Azevedo,Aristéa A.; Silva,Luzimar C.; Oliva,Marco A..
The goal of this study was to determine the symptoms and microscopic damage caused by fluoride on Spondias dulcis, a fluoride-sensitive species. The plants were exposed to simulated fog with fluoride (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 mg L-1) for 20 min daily during four consecutive days. Samples from leaflets without any apparent fluoride injury were collected to microscopic analysis. The percentage of necrosed leaf area was measured, and the level of pollutant in the dry matter from the basal and apical portions of the plant was determined. The necroses began 24 h after the first simulation mainly from the base of the leaflets. A higher level of necrosis was observed at the apical portion of the plants, a region of higher fluoride accumulation. The damage on the...

Early Administration of Peroxisomicine A1 (T-514 Extracted from K. parvifolia Seeds) Causes Necrosis of Implanted TC-1 Cells without Affecting Target Organs in a Murine Model International Journal of Morphology
Soto-Domínguez,Adolfo; Piñeyro-López,Alfredo; Saucedo-Cárdenas,Odila; Ramírez-Durónd,Rosalba; Waksman de Torres,Noemí; Sepúlveda-Saavedra,Julio.
Peroxisomicine A1 (PA1), one of the toxins isolated from seeds of plants of the Karwinskia genus, whose targets organs are the liver, kidney, and lungs. There is a selective toxicity in vitro to cancer-cell lines derived from the lungs, liver, and colon, compared to normal cell lines. PA1 caused apoptosis in several cancer-cell lines in culture. In toxic doses to rodents, it causes extensive apoptosis in the liver, kidney, and lungs. In our study we were interested in evaluating, for the first time, the morphological effects of administration of PA1 to implanted TC-1 cells and in the target organs in vivo. The TC-1 cells were cultured and injected into the hind limb of C57BL-6 mice. The animals were divided into 3 groups; those treated with four doses of 1...
